SERVICING YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

November 30th, 2009

What amazes me is some people and their fire extinguisher compliance.

I know this business man who confided in me that some years ago he had a small fire in his premises.
when he went to use his fire extinguisher nothing happened. It did not work
He had not had his fire extinguishers checked and serviced for many years. The fire although small caused some considerable damage.
I asked if he now has his extinguishers serviced regurally and he admitted that no he had not.

Some people just never learn.
You  hear about this sort of thing quite often and the usual excuse is they forgot or everthing now days is  over serviced and that industries are just created through compliance that are not necassary.

Tell that to the people and  who had their business  or home burnt down because they did not have their fire extinguisher serviced on a regular basis or had no fire equipment at all.
Please learn the lesson: have your fire control equipment seviced on a regular basis

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

July 5th, 2008

31/01/2008 1:08:24 PM

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts has congratulated Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) personnel on their continued commitment to the fire safety message.

Mr Roberts said survey data had revealed 96.2% of households now had at least one smoke alarm fitted, up almost 10% from November 2006.

This increase can be attributed to the State Government’s introduction of legislation last July that made it compulsory for all Queensland residences to have a working smoke alarm.

“These figures are great to see, and are a tribute to the efforts of the QFRS to keep Queenslanders safe,” Mr Roberts said.

“In Queensland, 78% of all home fire deaths occur in houses without smoke alarms, so the increase in compliance means lives are being saved.”

Mr Roberts said the skill and professionalism of the QFRS is also saving Queenslanders money.

In the 2006-07 financial year, the average loss in dollars from a structural fire in Queensland was $2,000, continuing its decline from $2,283 in 2003-04.

“When QFRS crews attend structural fires the first priority is to ensure all occupants are removed safely from the premises, but every effort is also made to protect the structure itself.

“In 2006-07, the QFRS responded to 50% of call-outs in 6.9 minutes. Overall the QFRS responded to 97.5% of call-outs under the target of 14 minutes.”

“Property loss in Queensland was also the lowest of any Australian state at just $23 per person, down from $29 last year.”
Most other states have a policy of fitting smoke alarms to all new homes and homes that are renovated
but we think that the qld rule should apply to all states.
Smoke alarms are very inexpensive (about $8 ) and all homes should have at least 1.
I also think that homes should have a fire blanket and at least a 1kg abe fire extinguisher fitted in their
kitchen area. This would stop a lot more property damage and possibly save more lives.
Eventually i think this will become mandatory.

HOME SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN

Kitchen Safety
Home Safety in the Kitchen
:
  • Keep children a safe distance from hot liquids.
  • Always use pot holders.
  • Turn pot handles in or use rear burners.
  • Hot grease causes severe burns – avoid using deep fat fryers around children.
  • Keep your fire extinguisher in a convenient location away from heat sources.
  • Follow instructions carefully when using microwave ovens.
  • Wear short sleeves or fleece clothing when cooking.
  • If your clothing should catch fire, immediately STOP, DROP and ROLL to smother flames.
  • Cool a burn with cold tap water. Do not apply butter. If severe, cover with a sterile pad or clean sheet and seek medical assistance immediately.
  • Scalds and burn injuries are on the increase. The highest risks are the very young and the elderly www.discontfireandsafety.com.au

FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN AND THE ROLE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

May 4th, 2008

Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Most cooking equipment fires start with the ignition of common household items (e.g., food or grease, cabinets, wall coverings, paper or plastic bags, curtains, etc.).

In 1999, there were 96,200 (USA) home structure fires associated with cooking equipment, resulting in 331 deaths, 4,183 injuries
and $511.3 million in direct property damage
.
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires.
Three in every 10 reported home fires start in the kitchen – more than any other place in the home
The best way to minimise damage and costly repair bills and maybe loss of life is to install a Smoke alarm,
a 1kg abe dry powder fire extinguisher and at least a 1mtr x 1mtr Fire blanket in your kitchen.
.

Safety Tips:
Always use cooking equipment tested and approved by a recognized testing facility.

Never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended, and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven
.
Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging).

Keep children and pets away from cooking areas by creating a three-foot (one-meter) “kid–free zone” around the stove
.
Turn pot handles inward so they can’t be bumped and children can’t grab them.

Wear short, close fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and catch fire.

Never use a wet oven mitt, as it presents a scald danger if the moisture in the mitt is heated.

Always keep a potholder, oven mitt and lid handy. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, put on an oven mitt and smother the flames by
carefully sliding the lid over the pan.Alternatively a fire blanket is better for this

Turn off the burner. Don’t remove the lid until it is completely cool.
Never pour water on a grease fire and never discharge a fire extinguisher onto a pan fire, as it can spray or shoot burning grease around the kitchen, actually spreading the fire.

If there is an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you and your clothing.

If there is a microwave fire, keep the door closed and unplug the microwave
Call the fire department and make sure to have the oven serviced before you use it again.
Food cooked in a microwave can be dangerously hot.
