A Man I Admire
Monday, November 30th, 2009SERVICING YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Monday, November 30th, 2009What amazes me is some people and their fire extinguisher compliance.
I know this business man who confided in me that some years ago he had a small fire in his premises.
when he went to use his fire extinguisher nothing happened. It did not work
He had not had his fire extinguishers checked and serviced for many years. The fire although small caused some considerable damage.
I asked if he now has his extinguishers serviced regurally and he admitted that no he had not.
Some people just never learn.
You hear about this sort of thing quite often and the usual excuse is they forgot or everthing now days is over serviced and that industries are just created through compliance that are not necassary.
Tell that to the people and who had their business or home burnt down because they did not have their fire extinguisher serviced on a regular basis or had no fire equipment at all.
Please learn the lesson: have your fire control equipment seviced on a regular basis

FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN AND THE ROLE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Sunday, May 4th, 2008Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Most cooking equipment fires start with the ignition of common household items (e.g., food or grease, cabinets, wall coverings, paper or plastic bags, curtains, etc.).
In 1999, there were 96,200 (USA) home structure fires associated with cooking equipment, resulting in 331 deaths, 4,183 injuries
and $511.3 million in direct property damage
.
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires.
Three in every 10 reported home fires start in the kitchen – more than any other place in the home
The best way to minimise damage and costly repair bills and maybe loss of life is to install a Smoke alarm,
a 1kg abe dry powder fire extinguisher and at least a 1mtr x 1mtr Fire blanket in your kitchen.
.
Never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended, and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven
.
Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging).
Keep children and pets away from cooking areas by creating a three-foot (one-meter) “kid–free zone” around the stove
.
Turn pot handles inward so they can’t be bumped and children can’t grab them.
Wear short, close fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and catch fire.
Never use a wet oven mitt, as it presents a scald danger if the moisture in the mitt is heated.
Always keep a potholder, oven mitt and lid handy. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, put on an oven mitt and smother the flames by
carefully sliding the lid over the pan.Alternatively a fire blanket is better for this
Turn off the burner. Don’t remove the lid until it is completely cool.
Never pour water on a grease fire and never discharge a fire extinguisher onto a pan fire, as it can spray or shoot burning grease around the kitchen, actually spreading the fire.
If there is an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you and your clothing.
If there is a microwave fire, keep the door closed and unplug the microwave
Call the fire department and make sure to have the oven serviced before you use it again.
Food cooked in a microwave can be dangerously hot.
